Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!

I hope you have a safe one!  I’m venturing out with one of my friends and his children.  It should be fun…

In the Christian tradition, tomorrow is All Saint’s Day.  This holy day is a chance to remember and honor the many saints who have gone before us, who fought the good fight and stood firm.  If there ever was a time that we needed people like them, it would be now.  Are you game?

Lentil Stew with Roasted Carrots and Mint

Well, the predictions were right.  Snow, snow, snow.  It’s been coming down since early morning, and the worst of it is due in this afternoon.

Luckily, I went to the store last night and stocked up.  It’s been awhile since I’ve made a lentil stew, and I thought this recipe might be a good choice.  Now that the mint growing wildly in my garden will be dead and covered with snow in a few hours, I figured I could use at least some up while it was still fresh.  Enjoy!

It’s Snow Time

In all the year’s I’ve lived in Maryland, I can’t recall ever having predictions of snow this early.  Heck, it isn’t even Halloween yet 🙁

Well, the weather forecasters are predicting, if you can believe it, up to eleven inches of snow in my area by Saturday night.  Yuck.

Reaching Out

Hope you’re having a good week.  Mine has been a bit rocky, with lots of stuff going on. Like most people, it seems like life is getting more and more complicated.  It’s hard to catch a break.

A few years ago, I was on an eight-day silent retreat based upon the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.  My retreat director was a priest by the name of Steve.

Moving Through Loss

I know some folks that are going through a tough time, and they are mourning the loss of many things they held dear.

It is hard to watch and participate in, and in fact, everyone associated with the situation grieves alongside them.

We all experience loss throughout our lives, and even the smallest ones feel very painful.   The larger ones can be downright overwhelming.

Black-Eyed Pea Soup

Happy Saturday to you 🙂  Forgive me for my inconsistent postings as of late.  To say that I’ve been busy would be an understatement, but I’m grateful for your patience.  Hopefully, my recent postings have helped you in some way.

I’m trying to get back on track with my Soup On Saturday posts, and today’s offering is simple, easy and tasty.  I hope you’ll enjoy it, especially as the weather cools and everyone is in the mood for a nice soup.

Two Roads Diverged

One of my all time favorite poems is The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost.  Life is all about choices, and this wonderful poem captures the essence of our decisions.  Which way to go?

The question could be asked about employment, relationships, finances, etc.  It could also be asked for the most simple of situations, like, truly, which path the take at the nature center.

He Has Plans

I went to a conference this weekend down in Richmond, VA.  According to the map, this shouldn’t be that long of a trip, traveling on major roads and, despite the rain, a nice drive.  Wrong.

From what I understand, some of the worst traffic in the country can be found on the highways I was traveling.  I can attest to this fact, and I have to say that even the congestion in Los Angeles doesn’t compare.  But, in the end, my trip was made better by a cd set that came in the mail the day before.

God Centered Friendships

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to get together with a group of my high school friends.  I keep in contact with two of them on a regular basis, but the others I hadn’t talked to in several years.  It was a joy to be with them, and I’m sorry that I don’t work hard enough on maintaining my relationships with each of them.

Nonetheless, it was great just hanging out, sharing a meal and fond memories of times gone by.  Of course, we’re all in middle age now, and our lives are not what they once were.

Life Is More Than Food

I met with a friend today for a little spiritual direction.  Actually, he’s going to meet with me each week from now until Christmas.

As homework and for my prayer, he gave me three Scripture passages:  1 Corinthians 13 (love), 2 Corinthians 4:8-11 (stress), and Matthew 6:25-33).  Of the three, the passage from Matthew had the most meaning for me.
