Learning about Diabetes

There are literally millions of people in the United States who have diabetes.  Up until the discovery of insulin in the 1920’s, a diagnosis of this disease was a death sentence.  Many didn’t survive a year.

Thanks to countless medical advances and improved patient awareness, it’s not abnormal be diabetic and live long, happy and productive lives.  The key to success is knowledge.  Sadly, many people are ignorant of the many things they can personally do to either reverse this disease or keep it under proper control.  It doesn’t have to be that way.

Goodbye Summer

Summer seemed like it flew by, didn’t it?  For many people, school is back in session this week, if it hasn’t started already.

When I was growing up, school always started after Labor Day.  Maybe it was the same for you.  Somehow, it seems a bit strange to go for a whole week, then get a three-day weekend.  I guess someone knows what they’re doing 🙂

Well, now that our rhythm of life has changed a bit, it should give us pause.

Developing Routines

Over the last six months, I haven’t been maintaining my eating and exercising routines that have helped me rectify some health issues.  My weight has been creeping up, along with my blood sugar numbers.

This hasn’t happened all at once, but slowly, over time.  I don’t know about you, but it’s easier not to think about it if changes happen over weeks and months versus hours and days.

Fresh Starts

We started our Freshmen Retreat today in the little chapel to the left of this photo.  Known as Little Baker Chapel, people have been praying here since the late 1800’s, and today was our chance to continue the tradition.

The place was packed as our new participants in Campus Ministry joined with their parents and a small group of student leaders who will be responsible for the retreat.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen the place so crowded.  It was great.

Changes

I hope your weekend was a good as mine.  I got a lot done, visited with friends, went to a crab feast, and enjoyed the much cooler weather that has come our way.

Yesterday, I had the chance to sit out on my patio for quite a while and catch up on my reading.  It was great to be able to sit in my backyard for more than thirty minutes before being forced back into the air-conditioned coolness of the house.  Can you feel the beginnings of fall?  I can sense the changes coming, and I’m of the opinion that they’re good changes.

Time Away

I’m just getting back from a week’s vacation in California.  Between camping at the beach, a high school reunion, and visiting with friends and family, I was pretty busy.  It was a great time and I feel recharged.  Isn’t that what time away is supposed to do for us?

My mom asked me what my favorite part was, and I told her it was camping at the beach.  I don’t make it there much anymore, and when I do get there, it reminds me of how much I miss living in Southern California.  Being with a big group of family made it even more special.
