Where Did The Time Go?

I’ve found myself asking this question a lot lately.  Over the weekend, I was getting ready for someone to come and paint several of the rooms inside my house.

I didn’t want to change colors, but just give everything a freshening up.  I knew I had a paper with all the color names and paint numbers, but it took me awhile to find it.  Who can remember names like Jersey Cream and Caen Stone?  With a tip I must have gotten from Martha Stewart, I had created a little chart that had all the paint names and numbers, along with the corresponding paint swatch.  What a great idea! 🙂

Keeping Calm

I don’t know about you, but it seems like there’s an awful lot of negative things going on in the world today.

I thought that maybe after the political conventions, the rhetoric might be toned down a bit.  No chance.

We all keep praying for peace in our world.  It seems like violence and hatred continue to raise their ugly heads more often than not.  And then there’s the economy, unemployment… The list goes on and on.

Goodbye Summer

Summer seemed like it flew by, didn’t it?  For many people, school is back in session this week, if it hasn’t started already.

When I was growing up, school always started after Labor Day.  Maybe it was the same for you.  Somehow, it seems a bit strange to go for a whole week, then get a three-day weekend.  I guess someone knows what they’re doing 🙂

Well, now that our rhythm of life has changed a bit, it should give us pause.

Developing Routines

Over the last six months, I haven’t been maintaining my eating and exercising routines that have helped me rectify some health issues.  My weight has been creeping up, along with my blood sugar numbers.

This hasn’t happened all at once, but slowly, over time.  I don’t know about you, but it’s easier not to think about it if changes happen over weeks and months versus hours and days.

The Feast of St. Ignatius- Free eBook Today Only

Today, July 31st, is the Feast of St. Ignatius.  I’ve gotten to know this great saint over the last several years, and I’ve also come to understand that, even though he lived nearly 500 years ago, his teachings still have an impact on us today.

Instead of a long post highlighting some key points of Ignatian Spirituality, I thought I’d just provide you with a link to Ignatian Spirituality.com, where you’ll find a great list of ten elements of this form of spirituality.

Lastly, if you click the link above today (July 31st), check out the free eBook (see top right box on the linked page) Loyola Press is giving away FREE today ONLY.  Recently published, Just Call Me Lopez was written by Margaret Silf.  She’s a great writer, and I’ll be reading through my own copy in the next few days.  Don’t miss this opportunity.

Thanks to Loyola Press for making this book available to everyone 🙂

Vacation Time

I heard a really good sermon yesterday preached by our newly ordained priest.  He’s from Columbia, and his messages are simple and practical.

He talked about the necessity of taking vacations, of being quiet, the need for relaxation and recharging.  How true.

He also talked about the importance of not taking a vacation from God.  So often, we do just that.  We don’t think much about God while we’re relaxing and re-charging.  How true.

So, that’s the message for today.  If you’re planning to take your vacation soon, make God a part of your plans.  Bring your Bible, find a church to go to, intentionally make time for prayer.  As St. Ignatius would reminds us, we can find God in all things, even while we’re on vacation.  Seek Him out.  “When you look for me, you will find me.  Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the Lord…” (Jeremiah 29:13-14).

31 Days With St. Ignatius

I’m really excited about something I learned earlier today.  The folks at Loyola Press are getting ready to celebrate the Feast of St. Ignatius on July 31st, and they want us to join them.

Its Never Too Late

There’s a popular Christian song that’s getting a lot of airtime right now.  By Toby Mac, the title is “Get Back Up” and, although it’s not what I would call easy listening, it’s very catchy and I think most people would like it.  The YouTube video is below for anyone who wants a look.  But the beat of the song is not important.  It’s the lyrics of the refrain that resonated with me, and I’m hoping it will be the same for you.

A Beautiful Morning

My dog Maggie hasn’t been feeling too well lately, and she’s been getting me up extra early. That’s o.k. with me, especially because the sun is just coming up as I pour my first cup of coffee.

Today is a beautiful morning.  This little container garden is just outside my kitchen door.  The sun rises right behind it, and over the years, it’s become one of my favorite places to pray.

I change the plantings each year just to keep things lively.  That being said, I always have some variety of hibiscus, geranium, fuchsia and coleus.  I was in a peachy kind of mood when I was at the nursery this year, so here’s what I got.

Moving Forward

Well, I am finally recovered from my three weeks of intensive doctoral studies at Catholic University.

I’ve had three or four days to reflect upon the many experiences, and to say it was a powerful time for me would be an understatement.

There is much fodder for this blog, so trust that you’ll be reading about my adventures over the next several weeks.  Suffice it to say that my studies have given me a fresh outlook on a lot of things.
