Learning about Diabetes

There are literally millions of people in the United States who have diabetes.  Up until the discovery of insulin in the 1920’s, a diagnosis of this disease was a death sentence.  Many didn’t survive a year.

Thanks to countless medical advances and improved patient awareness, it’s not abnormal be diabetic and live long, happy and productive lives.  The key to success is knowledge.  Sadly, many people are ignorant of the many things they can personally do to either reverse this disease or keep it under proper control.  It doesn’t have to be that way.

A few months ago I did a post on an organization founded by Dr. Steven Edelman called Take Control Of Your Diabetes (TCOYD).  Each year, this organization hosts conferences all over the United States, helping people from all walks of life learn about diabetes and how they can live their lives to the fullest, despite their diagnosis.  Attendees pay about twenty bucks to participate in a whole host of sessions.  Here’s a short you tube clip to give you an idea of what happens

Today, signed myself up for one of these conferences, and I’m taking a couple of family members with me.  I want us to live long, healthy and happy lives.  Knowing all there is to know about diabetes, and then turning that knowledge into action will be the key to our success.  It can and should be the same for you.

If you our someone you know has diabetes, get yourself educated.  Start with the TCOYD website.  Check out what another physician, Dr. Neal Barnard of George Washington University is doing.  Join the American Diabetes Association.   Just those three resources will give you months worth of reading material and ideas for improving the health and wellbeing of each and every person affected by diabetes.  Let’s face it, with this growing health crisis, we’re all affected in one way or another.  Let’s get educated!
