Watch Your Spending

I was talking with a friend the other night, and he was asking for my help on Thanksgiving night.  He needed me to go with him to a couple of the big stores in our area which are starting Black Friday a bit early.

I understand where he’s coming from.  He has little kids, and they have long wish lists.  I told him I would help, but I had to admit that I haven’t gone shopping on Thanksgiving or Black Friday for at least twenty years.  I’ve found that as we get closer to Christmas, you can find better deals.  But I guess that’s just me.

An Assessment

I had the chance to have lunch with a young friend today.  He’s been working on finding a job for several months now, and he’s finally gotten an offer.  I was really happy for him, and to celebrate, I took him  to a local Italian restaurant.

It will take some time for him to actually start, but right now, the offer letter is something to get excited about.

A Place To Pray

The time has come for me to move my prayer space inside.  During the warm months, I love to sit on the little patio outside my kitchen, where I have a couple of comfortable chairs, a nice table, and a little terra-cotta image of Mary holding the child Jesus.  I picked up the round ceramic piece in a shop in Florence, Italy, and I love its simplicity.  It’s a great mediation piece for me to look at as the sun comes up.  Emmanuel, God is with us.

But winter will be here before you know it, and it’s time to get a little sacred space going inside.

A Dangerous Adventure

Over the last several weeks, I’ve been leading some workshops for two groups at my church.  It’s been a lot of work, but in the end, I’ve been pleased with the feedback I’ve received.

The first group is made up of volunteer religion teachers.  The second group consists of professional educators who teach in Catholic schools.  While the content is the same, my approach to each group has been slightly different.  The subject is spirituality, and I was grateful to be able to weave in a lot of the thoughts of St. Ignatius and his approach to God and our relationship with Him.

Down They Go

Today was a little gloomy in my neck  of the woods.  Kind of damp and cloudy, it was one of the those days where you want to just lay around and read a book.

Except it was Thursday, which meant work for most of us.  Sorry, folks 🙁

No matter what, the leaves are slowly coming down and many of the trees in my area are now bare.  Driving around today, I saw noticed that many trees were still in their glory.  The red sugar maples were like fiery red torches.  They were glorious.

The Devil Is Always Around

You probably didn’t pick up on this today.  Most people wouldn’t, but since I love Italian art, the news story caught my eye.  It seems as though an art historian recently found an image of a demon hanging out in a fresco painted by Giotto in the 13th century (middle part of the cloud on the right. Look for the hooked nose).

The image above is from Reuters.  The scene is from a cycle of frescos in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.

The Older Brother

I was at a conference yesterday, and I was listening to Neal Lozano talk about his book, The Older Brother Returns.

The story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32 below) is one of the most powerful passages in Scripture.  The first time I ever heard an emphasis on the older brother was in a book, The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen.

Both authors remind us that the story, which we always thought was just about a wayward son returning home and how his father welcomed him home, was also about the self-righteous anger of the older brother.

A Little R and R

I don’t know about you, but things seem to be moving at break-neck speed lately.

It seems like I simply move from thing to thing, and at the end of the day, I shake my head wondering if I did anything really worthwhile.

How about you?  Are your days flying by too?  Are you in need of a little R & R?  Join the club 🙂
