Brendan’s Prayer

I was doing some cleaning this morning and had to put away one of my travel bags that had been sitting around for couple of weeks. It seems like I always leave a thing or two inside, so I checked and found a folded up scrap of paper.

Instead of throwing the paper away immediately, I unfolded it.  Printed inside was a prayer entitled “Brendan’s Prayer”. I don’t know where I got this, and I don’t know how long it’s been in this bag, which I’ve had a long time.  As I read the words, I realized that the message was very timely, and should to be shared, not later, but today.  I don’t know exactly who this is for, but I know it’s meant for someone who reads my blog.  Maybe it’s you?

Brendan’s Prayer

Lord, I will trust You,

Help me to journey beyond the familiar

and into the unknown.

Give me the faith to leave old ways

and break fresh ground with You.

Christ of the mysteries, can I trust You

to be stronger than each storm in me?

Do I still yearn for Your glory to lighten on me?

I will show others the care You’ve given me.

I determine amidst all uncertainty

always to trust.

I choose to live beyond regret,

and let You recreate my life.

I believe You will make a way for me

and provide for me,

if only I trust and obey.

I will trust in the darkness and know

that my times are still in Your hand.

I will believe You for my future,

chapter by chapter, until all the story is written.

Focus my mind and my heart upon You,

my attention always on You without alteration.

Strengthen me Your blessing

and appoint me to the task.

Teach me to live with eternity in view.

Tune my spirit to the music of heaven.

Feed me, and somehow,

make my obedience count for You.

If anyone knows who Brendan is and where this prayer is from, please let me know by posting a comment.  Enjoy the day 🙂

I love this prayer. I stumbled upon it shortly after I had my son, Brendan. I often look at his beaming 7 month old little face and think that he surely has a spirit tuned to the music of Heaven (And his name suits him much more than I would have ever imagined). This prayer is the prayer of St. Brendan, the patron saint of navigators. Since Brendan’s arrival it has become one of my favorite prayers. It has been a while since I have thought of this prayer. Thanks for the reminder, it is one I definitely needed.

Paul,
I believe you’ve found St. Brendan the Navigator’s Prayer. He’s a saint I didn’t know much about, but am planning to learn more as his prayer sounds like many I’ve been praying lately.
God Bless!
~Julie
