The Fear Factor

Recently, I’ve been listening to a personal development program, and yesterday’s session dealt with fear.  It’s amazing how this emotion can routinely drive our life.  In fact, according to the presenter, the fear factor  is one of the biggest reasons we fail to take action in our life.

Fear of failure, success, rejection, illness, pain, the unknown.  What might it be for you?

During World War II, Franklin Roosevelt spoke those immortal words, The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.  How often does some element of fear control us?  Listening to this cd yesterday was providential.

At a series of what seemed like unending meetings, the topic for discussion at all of them was the future.  Budget shortfalls, insolvent pension plans, salary reductions.  Instead of focusing on what we could do to turn these situations around in positive ways, it seemed to me that we were taking a pessimistic, fear-driven approach.  We would batten down the hatches and react.

Friends, the only way to deal with fear is to face it.  We need to take action, despite the fear.  The skydiver above would never have jumped out of the plane had he listened to the little voice in his head telling him all the reasons why he shouldn’t jump.

Of course, I’m not talking about diving into anything with reckless abandon.  If you want to overcome your fears, develop a plan to achieve that goal. Talk it through with someone you trust.  More often than not, you’ll quickly realize that you had nothing to fear after all.

Don’t let fear stop you from living life to the full.

About that personal development program…  I’ve been plowing through the set, and I’m planning on giving you a review in the next couple of weeks.
