I guess I better confess… I’ve got an addiction… I’m hooked on the TV reality show, Top Chef. Sorry if I scared you 🙂
I first started watching when I found out one of our local chefs was competing. As it turned out, he lost, but the whole concept of a bunch of chefs showing their culinary mastery week after week was fascinating to me, and I kept coming back for more.
This past spring, I had the chance to visit Volt, the restaurant owned by chef Bryan Voltaggio. He was the runner-up on Season 6, ultimately losing to his brother Michael. Well, let’s just say it was one of the best meals I ever had.
The latest season is taking place in Washington DC, and its got several more episodes before the finale. Check it out if you have the chance.
So, why am I talking about Top Chef? Inspiration! Shows like these can really get your creative juices going. Today, I stopped by a vegetable stand and bought a big bag of ripe tomatoes. When I got home, I took out one of my favorite cookbooks, The Fine Art of Italian Cooking written by Guiliano Bugialli. The guy’s a little quirky, but wow, what recipes!
I wanted to make a simple tomato sauce, and I found the perfect recipe. There are exactly seven ingredients. I’m having come company tomorrow night, and I wanted to test it out. The results were the essence of simplicity. I’ll get the recipe up tomorrow, along with some photos.
If you haven’t made a trek to a farmer’s market yet, time is running out! Most of the summer’s produce is at its peak right now. That’s certainly the case for tomatoes, zucchini, corn, peaches, and many more. Take advantage while you can. You just might find yourself addicted. Now, what could possibly be wrong with someone addicted to fruits and vegetables?
