Have Some Peanuts

I know this sounds like an odd title for a post, but I just wanted to get the word out there.  The humble peanut, when consumed in moderation, has a lot of health benefits.  I’m grateful for this, because, well, I love peanuts.

What are peanuts?

Did you know that peanuts are not considered part of the nut family? Yes, it’s true. Even though nut is a part of their name, Peanuts actually members of the legume family related to peas, lentils, chickpeas and other beans.

Legumes are edible seeds enclosed in pods. As a group, they provide the best source of concentrated protein in the plant kingdom.   Maybe that’s why I’m always pushing lentils on this blog 🙂 In comparison to similar foods, peanuts contain more protein than any other legume or nut.  So, the question is: are peanuts good for you?

Getting Proper Nutrition, Pt. 2

Several of my coworkers talked to me about my post yesterday.  They thought it would be nearly impossible to consistently eat nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day.  Hard, but not impossible.

Some raised the point about cost.  Yes, there is an additional cost to eating healthy. But what is the cost of not eating this way?  When you approach it like this, then I think you come to the realization that eating healthier is the way to go. The cost is worth it.

Getting Proper Nutrition, Pt. 1

Over the weekend, ten of my co-workers and I  visited with a nutritionist at one of our local grocery stores.  I’ve been really impressed that Martin’s Foods has a full-time nutritionist in six of their stores.

The goal in our meeting with Lisa was to help us find easy ways to stick to the Full Plate Diet, which encourages participants to eat at least 40 grams of fiber per day. According to the American Heart Association, the average American gets less than 15 grams per day. She gave us so much great information that I’m sharing it with you over a couple of days.  Today, I’m focusing on fruits and vegetables.
