Let us hold fast to our profession of faith without wavering (Hebrews 10:23)
We don’t use the expression hold fast much anymore. In the original Greek, hold fast meant not only to embrace, but to embrace with such force as if someone was trying to take something from you. In other words, you’ve got to hold on with a firm grip or you’re going to lose it. In the passage above, St. Paul reminds us that we must hold fast to our profession of faith.
Using the image above, I hope you can see how we’re in a kind of tug of war. Us on one side and the enemy on the other. He’s trying to take from us everything that we believe and hope for, and we need to hold on for dear life.
I don’t know about you, but some days I feel like I want to just let the rope slip out of my hands. I want to give up, the fight no longer in me. St. Paul’s challenge is for us to not buy into this way of thinking, but rather to hold on to what you believe, and you will persevere in the end.
No matter what our circumstances, we need to keep trying. We need to hold on, even if it’s just by a thread, trusting in what we believe in.
And what should you do if you’ve already let go of that rope of faith? Ask God to throw you another line. Knowing people the way He does, I’m sure He’s used to that request. Maybe we can hold on a little tighter, a little longer next time around.
