DSC06470A few days ago, I noticed that the first blooms on my roses this year would be on one of my new bushes, the Abraham Lincoln. As best I can recall, I don't ever remember a time when my mom didn't grow an Abraham Lincoln rosebush. It's a very strong plant, and produces florist quality, long-stemmed and highly fragrant red buds. Just beautiful, and it's easy for me to see why she loved it.

Happy May Day! The picture above and the guest post below are from Spirit Daily, a website I visit often. Given my recent posts about my own garden, I thought the post does a great job of taking garden imagery and adapting it for spiritual insights. I hope you'll think the same.

guymBy chance, I ran into an old acquaintance last Saturday at my local nursery. I'm not exactly sure where we first met, but we see each other out in the community now and again, and from time to time she'll post a comment here at Making All Things New.When I asked her how she was doing, she told me she's getting ready to retire this summer. Now, when most people retire, they dream of travel,...

tuscansunriseSorry for the long delay between postings. I've had so much going on that life just got in the way. With so much going on, including the death of my mom last month, I realized I needed to take a pause, to catch my breath, and to refocus. So, in the spirit of St. Ignatius, I made a retreat.

madonnaOver the course of the last few weeks, I mentioned to my siblings that they shouldn't be surprised if they have a sense of our mother's presence.Since she passed away a few weeks ago, at least one brother mentioned such an experience, felt in his yard as he was cutting some flowers.

A New Dawn

April 08, 2013 06:29

Sun2I was on the hunt yesterday for a climbing rose named New Dawn. It does very well in my area, and it's mentioned often on a weekly gardening radio show I listen to. Sadly, it's a bit early to plant roses here in Maryland, so there were none to be had at the nursery. I'll have to wait till the beginning of May, right around Mother's Day. Of course. I was thinking about my mom when I decided to...

irisflowerEarly one morning this week, I had to go outside to take the trash out. As soon as I was out the door, I was hit with a pungent odor. The smell of spring. We've been having some warm days lately, and winter's grip on the soil is loosening up. Growing up in Southern California, I never encountered the powerful smells that come with the spring thaw. Earthy is probably the best way to describe it....

sunrise newI hope you had a great weekend. I know I did.Actually, the whole week was pretty good for me. I got a lot accomplished, including some much-needed exercise. I also had the chance to catch up on some reading, met with several folks, and lastly I got some good prayer time in. The weekend ended on Sunday night with probably the best session my men's group has had since we started almost two years...

bonsecour2Wow, what a crazy week this has been! We started the week with the surprise resignation of Pope Benedict. As the week went on, we learned that there had been hints for quite some time that if the pope reached a point where he felt he couldn't fulfill his responsibilities, he would step down. It certainly is a time to pray for the Holy Spirit's wisdom!Next, we've had a week of near miss...
