The Truth Will Set You Free

May 20, 2011 16:42

Graduations are in full swing, with all the parties to follow.  Tomorrow, the seniors I've been working with for the last four years at Mc Daniel College will receive their diplomas and head off into the world.  Time flies.

One soon to be Mc Daniel Alumnus will be doing missionary work on college campuses through FOCUS.  Another is trying his hand at developing an on-line business or two. :) I wish them nothing but success.

I'll also be attending several graduation parties tomorrow.  All these activities has given me pause to recall my own "big" graduation, when I received my Master's Degree from Johns Hopkins, twenty years ago this week.

When I passed through the gates off Wyman Park Drive in August of 1989, I saw the University's motto for the first time.  I thought it odd that a secular school such as Johns Hopkins would choose a line from Scripture as its motto, but there it was.  Veritas vos Liberabit (John 8:28), The Truth Will Set You Free.

Recently, I've had some friends going through a rough time in their lives.  It's always hard to see bad things happen to good people, but, as I was praying this morning and reflecting upon my time at Hopkins, I came back to this wonderful line from John's Gospel.

Even though we sometimes want to run away from the truth, confronting it can sometimes be the very best thing we can do if we want to be truly free.  Maybe Johns Hopkins the man knew this intimately, and chose this line of Scripture to be the basis of the search that would take place on this campus.

When it's all said and done, living in the truth is the way to go.  Sometimes, honesty will lead to unexpected and even undesired consequences.  But you'll be able to hold your head up high, and we need more people doing that in our world today.
