Familiarity

October 03, 2011 14:57

It's nice to be home for a week.  Home being California.  As you might expect, the weather has been perfect.  Not quite the low 40's I left.

It's funny how much we crave familiarity, and it's sometimes hard to find it, isn't it? It might be people (like your family), or a place (like the beach), or some other thing (maybe a favorite food).  What might it be for you?

And yet, in difficult times, we want to be surrounded by people/things/places that make us feel safe, a reminder of better times.

But when you really reflect upon it, we are reminded that we can't be trapped in our past. We can't go back, we can only move forward.  It's been that way forever, and will always be.

So, what can we do?  Start thinking about the future!  Start thinking about how blessed we really are, even in the midst of difficulty.  We have it so much better than the vast majority of people we share this planet with.

Take out a piece of paper and write down three obtainable goals you want to achieve in the next six months.  Be sure they are reasonable and doable.  It makes no sense to say your goal is to make a million dollars if you are presently out of work.  You get my drift.

Maybe it's to learn a new skill, or go on a small vacation.  It could be to get your finances in order, to to reach out to an old friend.  Whatever it may be for you, the key is to get out there and do something.  Soon.  Make it soon.

In my mind we can turn things around, but it has to start with us.  Today, I'm going to take out all the summer crops in my mother's garden, and prepare the bed for the fall/winter vegetables we'll be planting later in the week.

She had great success in her garden this summer, but those plants are done.  Now, we need to get things into the ground for the future.  Without a little work and a plan, nothing is going to happen.  You know what I mean...

So, folks, let's get to work.  Let's not get trapped in the past, but let's make a future that will also become familiar to us.  Sound like a plan?   Have a great day :)
